New Teacher Orientation

The New Teacher Orientation is a five week online course designed for ABE, ESL, GED, Corrections, Family Literacy, WorkFirst and El Civics instructors that have recently entered the field of adult education or are new to the Washington adult basic education system. The course provides an overview of services within the system, the Washington State Adult Learning Standards, Goal Setting, EFF, and useful resources in the field. In addition, this is an excellent opportunity for newer teachers to develop a cohort with each other in order to share ideas about adult education practices, learn about different program practices, and share teaching experiences and strategies. The expected time commitment is typically 10-15 hours over the course of a five-week period. The course was created by ABE Professional Development Coordinators Patti McLaughlin and Susan Kidd. The course will be offered annually in the fall. Prior experience with Blackboard is not required.

Registration - If you are interested in taking the course, please fill out the registration form. When submitted, your name will be placed on a waiting list. The course will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Teachers who are not admitted to the class due to over enrollment will be given the first opportunity to register for the next class offering. Since class size is limited, we encourage you to complete and submit your registration form as soon as possible.
