Basic Food, Employment and Training

The Basic Food, Employment and Training program (BFET) provides access and services to food stamp recipients in Washington State. Services include job search and job search training, education and skills training, and support services to Basic Food recipients not participating in the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

The BFET program, offered through the Department of Agriculture, is a source of funds for state and local agencies. Customarily, states administer the process through a designated BFET administrative agency. In our state, the Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS) is the designated agency. There are currently twelve community and technical colleges participating in the BFET program in King, Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties. Five additional colleges are expected to participate in FY2011.

DEFINITION OF A BFET COMPLETER:

"Completion" means the attainment by a BFET participant of a certificate or similar acknowledgement (including completion of a series of course credits) that indicates goal achievement. BFET participants and community and technical college partner staffs will establish goals through the completion of an individual education plan at assessment. This plan will be amended as participants progress.
