Learning Outcomes

The College Readiness Project has developed learning outcomesPDF for the areas of:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Observing, Listening, Speaking (note taking, group roles, presentations)
  • Student Responsibility (study skills, working with others, successful student behaviors)
  • Technology (technology literacy with basic information technology)

Each area has overarching "Learning Outcomes" that have been made more specific through "Content Standards." The content standards clarify the key abilities needed to demonstrate the outcome.

There is not a category called "Critical Thinking." As is stated before each of the learning outcomes areas, the premise is that "critical thinking" is embedded in each of the disciplines. College-ready students must use analysis, synthesis, interpretations, and evaluation of ideas and reasoning to test information presented to them and to test their own thinking. While "study skills" is a component of Student Responsibility, it is also a premise that study skills are embedded in each of the disciplines.

It is also assumed that there is overlap between all these areas and not assumed that each area is taught in a separate course. Most of the assessments include outcomes from more than one area. For example, one of the content standards for Student Responsibility is "Follow directions - both written and oral." This will appear frequently on assessments in any area.

These outcomes are the minimal expectations for exit and were agreed upon by faculty in all the two year colleges. However, individual colleges or faculty may have additional outcomes specific to their campus or course.

All the assessments found on this site were developed to evaluate the learning outcomes and content standards. The type of outcomes may be similar to those found at other educational levels; however, the criteria (rubrics) for the assessments and the evaluations of sample student work indicate the expected level of expertise for exiting developmental education students.
