Outcomes Assessments

The sample assessments included on this site were designed to measure developmental education exit level learning outcomes. They were created by developmental education faculty throughout Washington State and were reviewed and revised by additional faculty to ensure agreement that these are exit-level assessments. The assessments are intended as a resource to developmental education programs and faculty throughout the state and are not required for use. How faculty decides to teach and assess the outcomes is an individual choice. You are invited to submit assessments for possible inclusion in the toolbox.

The format of the assessments was standardized to clarify the directions and for ease of transfer from one educational setting to another. While the assessments are identified under a specific area - Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Student Responsibility, Technology, and Observing, Listening, Speaking - they will include outcomes from areas other than the primary heading.

Instructor’s Page

  • Purpose of the Assessment.
  • Learning outcomes measured by the assessment with links to specific content standards.
  • Notes to the instructor that includes additional instructional information and suggested adaptations.

Student pages will contain an explanation of:

  • The task/activity students must complete.
  • Instructions for completing the task/activity.
  • What must be turned for grading.
  • Criteria for Evaluating (how a student's grade will be determined). This page matches the criteria to the outcomes. As student self-assessment is considered to be a crucial part of learning, the students are asked to complete the same evaluation page. Other self-assessment methods are also encouraged.
  • Additional pages may be included in the assignment such as forms, handouts, etc.

If samples of student work are available for a specific assessment, a link will be provided.
