All-Washington Academic Team Ceremony

All Washington Academic Team

How PIOs are Involved in the All-Washington Awards

The All-Washington Academic Team program recognizes and honors our state's finest higher education students. The program relies on the efforts of college communications, advancement, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) sponsors, and other campus leaders to stay on track.

Deadlines

Each college nominates two stellar students to represent Washington state on Phi Theta Kappa's national All-USA Academic Team, and those students, in turn, will represent your college on the state-level All-Washington Academic Team.

By mid-January — at the latest — PTK should send Kellie Purce Braseth, Dean of College Relations at South Puget Sound Community College, a list of the students who met the criteria for the team.

When she gets the list, she will send it to PIOs to check for accuracy. She uses the list and short bios and photos sent by PIOs to create the ceremony booklet.

Kellie needs a photo (head shot) and short biography for each member of the team by January 28, 2012.

Student Bios

Please send Kellie a 60- to 70-word bio on each of your college’s nominees by the January 28, 2012 deadline. You can submit:

Student Photos

Two important photo specifications:

  1. Please send un-cropped, un-doctored mug shots. This gives our graphics manager some flexibility in positioning the shot; and
  2. Name them as follows: Your college name followed by the student's last name and first initial. (e.g. SouthPugetSound_BrasethK.jpg)

Email photo(s) to kbraseth@spscc.ctc.edu by the January 28, 2012 deadline.

The Ceremony

The ceremony begins at noon on Thursday, March 22, 2012 in the South Puget Sound Community College Student Union Building.

An invitation has been extended to the Governor to participate. PIOs will be notified when and if she commits.

As happens each year, your team members will be presented with a medallion.

Please make sure your student(s) know about the ceremony and, please try to confirm their presence so your president (and hopefully, the Governor) has someone to hang a medallion on.

Just like last year, it is entirely possible that some of your students may actually receive two medallions if they are named to the Coca-Cola All-State Team.

We will have a photo area and professional photographer, as usual.

Governor's Proclamation

Each year, the Office of the Governor declares All-Washington Academic Team Day and issues a proclamationpdf.

Legislators

As you know, this is a great opportunity to connect with your legislators. Please be sure to invite them to the ceremony. We will not be offering a shuttle between the college campus and capital campus. It always seems to work best when you guys get your representatives to the event.

Money, Money, Money

As always, we’re working the money angle for our students. Here are the highlights:

KeyBank, Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA), WSECU

KeyBank, NELA, and the Washington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU) have each donated enough money to fund a $750 scholarship for every single member of the team.

Please make a point of mentioning KeyBank and NELA when you write about your All-Washington team members. Their logos will be downloadable from the web site All-Washington Academic Team website.

New Century Scholars

PTK national will pick one team member from each state to be the New Century Scholar. Washington’s winner will get a certificate and a special mention at the All-Washington ceremony. We should learn who our state's New Century Scholar is by mid-February.

Four-year College Scholarships

I'm hearing from our public four-year college partners and the independent four-year college about re-upping their scholarship offers again this year. So far, all have been positive. I have not updated that information on the web yet, but when it's ready, you can direct your students to the online scholarship information.
