What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights statute that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funds. It is part of the 1972 Education Amendments. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) within the US Department of Education is responsible for enforcing Title IX. Since our colleges receive federal funds, the athletic program falls under Title IX regulations.

In 1979, OCR issued an “Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Interpretation” to clarify the Title IX requirements for athletic programs. OCR has also issued the following athletic policy documents: "Clarification of Intercollegiate Athletics Policy Guidance: The Three-Part Test" (Clarification), "Title IX Athletics Investigator’s Manual" and guidance on athletic scholarships issued in July 1998.
