The state's community and technical colleges are recognized for their responsiveness to the educational and economic needs of their communities. As reflected in the State Board's System Direction, colleges are committed to helping students achieve their learning goals by providing:
- Quality academic transfer programs.
- Workforce and education training programs relevant to local needs that meet the needs of students and employers and lead to job opportunities for highly-trained graduates in emerging, high-wage career fields.
- Basic skills, including English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), to prepare students to participate successfully in the economy as citizens and parents.
Common Course Numbering
Common course numbering is a project to make course transfer between and among the 34 community and technical colleges as easy as possible for students, advisors and receiving institutions. The project is currently in the process of identifying common courses and assigning common course IDs and titles.
Following a study that compared the demand for baccalaureate capacity to 2010 with the enrollment growth plan of the public baccalaureate institutions, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges directed the executive director to:
- Pursue expanded partnership models of University Centers,
- Begin planning for pilot community and technical college baccalaureate degrees,
- Support expansion of upper division capacity at baccalaureate institutions.
