The Student Completion Initiative 2009-2012


Purpose

The Student Completion Initiative will improve access and completions for low-income young adults in pre-college and college courses in Washington state community and technical colleges over the next three years.

It is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Washington State Legislature.

Funding

The initiative funds the following three projects:

Open Course Library

Access and success in 81 high-enrollment courses will be expanded through lower textbook costs for students, new resources for faculty, and improved course completion rates. College faculty and staff were funded over two years to design 81 digital courses for face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online delivery.

Rethinking Pre-College Math

Student completions in pre-college mathematics courses and their success in college-level math classes will be improved. Six to 8 college math departments (depending on funding levels) will be funded over a three-year period (for up to $120,000 each overall) to make substantive changes in their pre-college math programs and instructional practices.

I-BEST Developmental Education Models

I-BEST for developmental education models will extend the pathways in currently-approved I-BEST programs that are at least two quarters in length (with the possible addition of a "green economy" pathway). Grants to 10 colleges of $80,000 each will be available over the 2010-2011 period ($160,000 maximum over two years).
