Avista Manager Patty Shea joins CCS Board of Trustees

Gov. Christine Gregoire has appointed Avista Utilities’ Patty Shea to a five-year term with Community Colleges of Spokane’s Board of Trustees.

Shea is central dispatch (emergency services) manager with Avista Utilities in Spokane.

Her interest in CCS began more than 26 years ago, when she enrolled in Spokane Community College’s mid-management and executive secretary programs. She graduated from SCC with two associate in applied science degrees in 1979.

In 1985, Shea returned to SCC to complete an associate of arts degree in liberal arts, transferring to Eastern Washington University where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration. She also is a graduate of Leadership Spokane.

Shea has served on numerous community college advisory and program committees, is a regular presenter at college leadership development programs, and has taught business, marketing, and management courses part time at SCC.

She also served on the CCS Foundation Board of Directors from 1998 to 2002.

Praeger honored for Head Start innovations

Spokane Falls Community College Vice President of Learning Pam Praeger was honored as a dream deliverer by Head Start for her work with Spokane County Head Start as its director (1984-89) and executive director (1989-98).

At the Head Start Region 10 Director’s Forum in Seattle in November, Praeger was honored at a celebratory evening event, “Delivering on the Dream,” commemorating Head Start’s 40 th anniversary.

Under Praeger’s leadership, Spokane Head Start received national innovation grants for English as a Second Language infants and toddlers nine years before any other programs served children under age three. She also oversaw development of curriculum to support children of alcoholic parents and a two-year multicultural project for families.

Head Start programs from Region 10 ( Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska) were asked to nominate people and organizations whose work has enhanced and enriched the lives of Head Start children and families.
