A review of "Student Portfolios and Teacher Logs: Blueprint for a Revolution in Assessment" by Robert Calfee and Pam Perfumo, Technical Report #65, National Center for the Study of Writing at the University of California at Berkeley.

The authors did an intensive review of 150 situations where portfolios were used to assess student literacy at the elementary level.
