2004-05 Workforce Education Grants – NEW projects for this academic year

These allocations include grants for Centers of Excellence, Workforce Development projects, and Integrated Basic Education & Skills Training projects. In addition to the projects listed here, each college receives funding to update programs and many colleges receive funds to continue projects that were first awarded grants in 2003-04.

Bellevue Community College $100,000 for Center for Information Technology Excellence

$75,000 to integrate English as a second language instruction with a nursing assistant program

Bellingham Technical College $100,000 to expand high-demand medical office assistant programs and move them to a fast-track model

Green River Community College

$99,210 for the Washington State Center for Careers in Education (Center of Excellence)

Highline Community College
Des Moines
$100,000 to create a pre-nursing project to prepare ethnically diverse and disadvantaged personnel at long-term care facilities to be successful in nursing prerequisites, leading to acceptance in an associate degree in nursing program

Lake Washington Technical College
Kirkland
$54,500 to design and offer a program that integrates English as a second language instruction with the college’s industrial plant maintenance program

Olympic College
Bremerton
$100,000 to expand the college’s welding program, supporting demands at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and from other local employers

$53,018 to develop an integrated English Speakers of Other Languages/Nursing Assistant Certified program

Peninsula College
Port Angeles
$100,000 to further develop and expand the college’s medical assistant program

Pierce College District
Lakewood
$100,000 for Center of Excellence for Homeland Security based at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood

Renton Technical College $99,974 for Construction Center of Excellence

$75,000 to develop a new program providing a customized pathway for non-native English speakers to successfully complete allied health skills training (certified nursing assistants to licensed practical nurses to registered nurses)

Skagit Valley College
Mount Vernon
$100,000 for Northwest Center of Excellence in Marine Manufacturing and Technology

$100,000 to expand capacity in the registered nursing program (Northwest Alliance)

$74,934 to develop a health occupations career ladder for English as a second language students, creating multiple pathways for ESL students to prepare for healthcare careers

South Seattle Community College $100,000 for development of the college’s wine technology program

Spokane Community College District
Community Colleges of Spokane
$100,000 to offer a licensed practical nursing program at Colville; the Institute for Extended Learning will deliver prerequisite courses through Spokane Falls Community College and LPN courses in partnership with Spokane Community College

Wenatchee Valley College $96,694 to support expansion of the college’s nursing program, an effort started in spring 2000
