agenda
- increased access to bachelor’s degrees
- permanent funding for faculty salary increases
- money for maintain new buildings
OLYMPIA –The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is slated to adopt its 2006 legislative request package for the two-year colleges, including the 2006 supplemental operating and capital budget requests. The Board also will consider the criteria for selecting community and technical college applied bachelor’s degree pilots when it meets October 18 and 19 at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon.
The legislative request package contains $22 million in additional funds to address student access and faculty salary issues, a $19 million supplemental capital budget request, a policy bill to address permanent funding for faculty salary increases. The State Board will also consider supporting a policy that would create predictable and stable maintenance and operations funding for newly constructed capital facilities.
“Our colleges are in the process of developing pilot projects to offer applied bachelor’s degrees,” said Earl Hale, State Board executive director. “We will be requesting funds to support this critical statewide need. In addition, we will seek second year compensation funding for our faculty and funds to maintain the facilities that have been provided in recent appropriations from the Legislature.”
The 2005-06 work plan and budget for the State Board office will be reviewed by the State Board. The proposed work plan supports critical initiatives around economic development, access and affordability, funding and allocations, and seamless education.
State Board members will hear a status report on the Economic Development Study, which will provide an in-depth analysis of the college system’s role in economic development, as well as a report on the key discussions and interim recommendations from Governor Gregoire’s education finance study, Washington Learns.
The board will meet in a study session 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 18 and conduct regular business from 8:15 to 11:00 a.m. on Oct. 19. Both sessions will take place at the
McIntyre Hall Conference Center at Skagit Valley College, 2405 College Way, Mount Vernon. The board has scheduled a dinner meeting Tuesday with trustees and administrators of Skagit Valley College. All meetings are open to the public.
