Community and technical college board to consider operating budget request and new goals for two-year colleges
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on September 13 and 14 to consider the 2007-09 operating budget request as well as a new set of goals and priorities for the two-year colleges.
The Board will consider an operating budget request increase of $227 million. Money is requested to expand college programs to meet the demands of the economy, to implement new support programs that help students succeed and to launch innovative programs that keep colleges on the cutting edge.
“The operating budget request aims to help the two-year colleges meet the growing demands of business and industry across the state, and create opportunities for higher education for more residents in Washington,” Executive Director Charlie Earl said. “We want to increase the skills and knowledge of adults and help increase the prosperity of Washingtonians and the state.”
The Board will conduct a work session on September 13 to review the details of the operating budget request and the State Board office budget and work plan. Board members will also discuss the new system direction.
During the regular meeting, the State Board will consider approving a temporary delegation of authority for the executive director to complete the SBCTC office move, as well as approving authority for Edmonds Community College to use up to $1,000,000 of local funds to renovate its athletic field. At this meeting, the State Board is scheduled to approve the operating budget request and its new system direction. The Board will also consider approving an optional tuition waiver for student athletes. The State Board will hear presentations about the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board’s new study of the state’s workforce development system and the new applied bachelor’s degree programs. Three of the four colleges offering applied bachelor’s degree programs will give presentations – Bellevue, Peninsula and South Seattle community colleges. Whatcom Community College will give a presentation as the host college.
The Board’s study session is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. on September 13. The regular meeting is scheduled from 8:15 to 12:00 p.m. on September 14. All meetings will take place at the Whatcom Community College Syre Student Center, Room 216, 237 West Kellogg Road, Bellingham.
