Community and technical college board focuses on technology and student access
OLYMPIA – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on December 4 and 5 in Bothell to start the process for awarding applied bachelor’s degrees and consider changes to the five technical colleges in the state.
“The Board will explore expanding the breadth of the community and technical colleges, seeking more opportunities for students,” Executive Director Charlie Earl said.
The Board will consider approval of the timeline to select two colleges to offer applied bachelor’s degrees, which were funded by the 2007 Legislature. The colleges that submitted intent to develop an applied degree proposal are:
- Columbia Basin College, Tri-Cities – Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Applied Technology Management and Entrepreneurship
- Lake Washington Technical College, Kirkland – Bachelor’s of Applied Technology in Applied Design
- Seattle Central Community College – Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences
The Board will also consider the recommendation of a college system taskforce to allow technical colleges to increase transfer opportunities that prepare students for professional bachelor’s degrees needed in the workforce.
The Board may approve a resolution encouraging the State Board of Education to align a third year of required math for high school graduation to standards for 11th and 12th grade, and recommend that high school career and technical programs develop courses that reflect Algebra II concepts and skills.
The Board will hear reports from the technology transformation and student listening taskforces and hear about progress in early learning. They will also have follow-up discussions about their summer retreat. As the host college, Cascadia Community College will make a presentation to the Board.
The Board will consider taking action approving the State Board office annual budget and recognizing the new role of the Washington Executive Leadership Academy Board of Directors. They will consider property acquisitions for Seattle Central Community College and Bellevue Community College, as well as a property sale of land on a satellite campus of Columbia Basin College.
The study session is scheduled on December 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. and the regular meeting will be held on December 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All meetings will take place at Cascadia Community College, 18345 Campus Way NE, Bothell, in the North Creek Events Center.
