GED Testing


Who is Eligible to take the GED Test in Washington?

According to Washington State law, the following individuals are eligible to take the GED Test (WAC131-48-100):

  • Any person younger than 16 years of age is NOT eligible for GED Testing.
  • Any person 19 years or older who has not graduated from high school and is not enrolled in a public or private high school program; or
  • Any person age 16 through 18 years of age who has not graduated from high school, is not enrolled in a public or private high school program, and who has been adjudged by a Washington State school district to have a substantial and warranted reason for leaving the regular high school education program; or
  • Any person age 16 through 18 years of age who has completed a program of home -based instruction in compliance with RCW 28A.225.010 (4) as certified by the written an notarized statement of the parent(s) or guardian(s) who provided the home-based instruction; or
  • Any person who is an active member of the military, national guard, or reserves.
  • Adjudicated youth under the director of prisons, jails, detention centers, parole and probation offices, and other corrections facilities while enrolled in school or ordered by a court or officer of the court.

Who is Eligible for award of a Certificate of Educational Competence (GED)?

According to Washington State law, the following individuals are eligible for award of a GED certificate (WAC 131-48-110):

  • A resident of Washington state, and
  • Any person 19 years of age or older on the date of issuance;
  • Any person who has been adjudged by a district as possessing a substantial and warranted reason for leaving the regular high school education program.
  • Any person who has completed a program of home-based instruction.
  • Any person who is an active member of the military, national guard, or reserves.
  • Any person who is an adjudicated youth under the director of prisons, jails, detention centers, parole and probation offices, and other corrections facilities while enrolled in school or ordered by a court or officer of the court.

What you need to test:

  • Current government-issued picture identification that has your name, address, birth date, and signature on it.
  • $75 testing fee.
  • Completed High School Release form or notarized statement of completion of home-schooling program.

How to schedule GED Testing:

Testing schedules are determined by local GED testing centers. The State GED Office does not maintain detailed information for individual test centers. To make an appointment to take the GED test, contact the test center nearest you.

Retesting may be done until minimum scores are obtained. Retesting fees are determined by the test center. In any calendar year, you may retake any one of the five GED sub-tests three times. Scores do carry over from year to year.
