Recommended Publications

Career in Institutional Research from the Chronicle of Higher Education's CAREER NETWORK section (October 23, 2002). This is an article about jobs in institutional research.

Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (2020). This report presents the findings and recommendations from a distinguished national panel. While the reports focus is on student learning and curriculum, the first two chapters provide a good overview of higher education and some national data. Read the whole report though, it's worth it.

How to Conduct Your Own Survey by Priscilla Salant and Don A. Dillman. Recommended by Loretta Seppanen a couple of years ago. It's not really complex or statistical, but it does give some good tips for surveying and it puts it in language that everyone can understand.

Measuring up: The State-by-State Report Card for Higher Education (Measuring up 2006) by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. The Center gives each state "grades" in six performance categories: preparation, participation, affordability, completion, benefits, and learning.

People, Processes, and Managing Data by McLaughlin, Howard, Balkan, and Blythe. Association for Institutional Research.

The Primer for Institutional Research by Whiteley, Porter, and Fenske is an AIR publication. It may not address some of the local issues we face, but in general cuts a wide swath.

Reference Sources: An Annotated Bibliogaphy for Institutional Research has more titles than I'll ever have time to read.

Setting Up an IR Office by Todd Massa.

Strategies for the Practice of Institutional Research by Michael F. Middaugh, et al., Association for Institutional Research '94.
